Jackson Hole is both a trail and road runner’s paradise. A scenic, well built paved pathway system, which extends over 50 miles connects the towns of Jackson and Wilson to Grand Teton National Park. From the valley floor trails fill the hills and mountains in all directions. There’s everything from short, half hour lunch-break runs, to long-distance mountain traverses and loops most people only see on backpacking trips.
Trail

In Grand Teton National Park the Valley Trail traverses the base of the mountains on the east and is relatively flat. If you’re looking for more of a challenge, try running into the canyons. Cascade Canyon isn’t very steep, except for a climb near the mouth of the canyon. Paintbrush Canyon is a steady climb to over 10,000′, guaranteed to make you work hard! Or if you’re looking for an epic adventure and have the legs you can take on the Teton Crest Trail that stretches from Teton Pass to Jenny Lake covering over 40 miles. There are several access points so there are shorter runs to be had on the Teton Crest Trail, stop by and talk to our staff to check out some maps if you’re wanting to tackle this Teton Classic.
Trail Running Ideas
1. Cache Creek Trailhead – Located just southeast of the town of Jackson this trail network hosts a plethora of trails and is frequented by locals. The main double track trail follows the creek up the drainage serving as the backbone to this trail network. There is the Putt Putt Trail to the north which rolls up and down the hillside on the warm south-facing slope or Hagan Trail to the south which features less elevation and stays cool under the canopy of the forest. Longer runs can be pieced together by going up the Game Creek divide or the face of Snow King Ski Resort. Popular with cyclists, dog walkers, and hikers be sure to stay aware during busy hours and be friendly as everybody plays nicely together.
2. Goodwin Lake and Jackson Peak – By taking the Elk Refuge road northeast out of town and up Curtis Canyon you can make your way to the Goodwin Lake trailhead where you’ll find a progressive uphill trail that will lead you to a beautiful lake at the base of Jackson Peak. If you’re feeling good after the 3 mile run to the lake you can continue up to Jackson Peak which adds only a couple extra miles but around 1000′ of extra vertical over loose terrain. This locals gem features views that rival anything in Teton National Park with far fewer crowds.
3. Teton Valley Trail in Grand Teton National Park – This trail connects most of the lakes at the base of the Tetons in Grand Teton National Park. This gives you multiple starting areas and while the areas around the lakes can be busy you’ll find the miles of trail connecting the lakes to be all your own. The trail is mostly flat, features amazing Teton views, and is a must do for any trail runner while in the Tetons.
Road

Jackson Hole also has one of the best paved pathway systems in America courtesy of our local non-profit Friends of Pathways. With over 60 miles of paved pathways connecting the communities of Jackson, Teton Village, Moose, Rafter J, and Wilson there’s an endless supply of road running no matter where you’re at in the Valley.
Road Running Ideas
1. Wilson to Teton Village – This is an amazing section of pathway that goes from the town of Wilson up to Jackson Hole Mountain Resort located in Teton Village. About 6 miles each way depending on where you jump on the pathway you’ll meander what is known as the “west bank” by locals. The pathway is mostly shaded, has amazing Teton views, and you’re likely to see a moose down near the water if you keep your eyes open.
2. Elk Refuge Road – This dirt road just northeast of the town of Jackson runs along the back side of the Elk Refuge. Unless you’re running in winter you wont see any elk as they venture to higher elevations during most of the year but big horn sheep can be found here year round. This is a local favorite as it’s nearly flat, dries out early in the spring, and is extremely close to town.
3. Moose to Jenny Lake – This pathway is located in Teton National Park and technically starts in the town of Jackson. This pathways has many sections that are enjoyable but the best section has to be from the Bradley Taggart trailhead to Jenny Lake which is around 10 mile round trip. Once at Jenny Lake you can continue on to String Lake if you’re looking to add a couple extra miles.
